When on holiday at the coast, or when the fair came to town, I always used to find myself heading out in my Woolsey shirt and going in the direction towards the amusement arcades. Here I would find a variety of coin operated games to keep me amused for hours. It might have been something like the traditional slot machine or one armed bandit where I would always be hoping for the jackpot. (Where you aware that at one time or another most countries have actually banned these machines with the view that they promote gambling and can cause debt for vulnerable people?). Most arcades, including those in Loughborugh, still have one armed bandits, or the modern version which are electronically operated – no more super strength right arms required. However the variety of machines to keep you entertained has increased. Pinball machines were another of my favourite but video games seem to have taken over in popularity. Whilst you might not find Pong, Pacman, Space Invaders or Lunar Lander anymore you will find their offspring that have near film quality graphics where you can dodge, shoot, explode, kick, strangle and punch your computer foe to his doom. So if you have a while to wait for a bus, or you are waiting for your friends to meet you in town in Loughborough, why not pop into one of the brightly coloured arcade games venues and have a quick game of something whilst you wait. Just make sure that you don’t get too carried away and miss your bus to Shepshed or wherever else you were planning to go.
