Further Information on Plumbers
The word plumber is derived from Latin. In Roman times, pipes were made of lead, (the Latin for lead being plumbum). Consequently, a person who worked with these lead pipes was known as a Plumbumber. Over time this has been shortened to plumber.
Plumbing originated not only in the Roman Empire but also separately in Persian, Indian, and Chinese civilizations. As civilisation progressed they developed public baths and needed to provide potable water, and drainage of wastes.
Loughborough’s first piped water supply was created by Henry Fearon and terminated at the fountain bearing his name in the Market Place at the centre of the town.
