De Montfort University (DMU) students are helping to make homes safer with a new scheme being run in conjunction with police in Leicester.

A team of five volunteers have been fitting door chains, locks and other security measures to 50 houses in the West End of the city, near to the University campus.

Officers from Hinckley Road local policing unit have been working closely with volunteers and will support them on visits. The measures will not just be available to student houses but to any home which might need extra help to make it secure.

Involve, DMU's Student Volunteering Service wrote to the homes asking if they were interested in taking part in the scheme.

DMU Volunteer Support Officer Rebecca Cameron said: "We wanted to get the students involved in something which gives back to the community and this seemed like a good way to do it. We worked very closely with the local police and Leicester City Council's Feel Safe Project to ensure the students were trained properly to fit the security measures. The feedback from the residents they have helped has been very positive."

The scheme has been funded with over £1,000 from the Hinckley Road Joint Action Group, which is made up of local organisations including the police, schools and businesses.

Sergeant Steven Hutchings from Hinckley Road local policing unit said: "The Student Volunteer Group scheme is an excellent project and represents the students giving something back to the community. The area has a large number of vulnerable terraced properties that often suffer from increases in burglaries throughout the year. The work being undertaken by the volunteers is a superb example of neighbourhood policing at work, with local organisations coming together to solve problems and improve the area."
