Little Britain character to be assessed at Department of Media and Communication event on 16 April
The BBC comedy series Little Britain will form the basis of a talk to be delivered at the University of Leicester on 16 April.
The event will assess how ‘the poor’ are portrayed through the assessment of the character Vicky Pollard.
Sharon Lockyer, of Brunel University, presents her seminar ''No But Yeah But Shut Ap!’ Popular Comedy and Social Class Identities' for the Department of Media and Communication, incorporating the Centre for Mass Communication Research.
This event will take place on Wednesday 16 April 2008 at 3.30pm, in Attenborough Lecture Theatre 1. It is open to the public and free.
Sharon Lockyer said: “Since first appearing on British television screens in 2003, the satirical character-based sketch show, Little Britain, has continued to court controversy.
“This seminar examines how Little Britain constructs ‘the poor’ through analysis of a character that gained a wealth of critical media attention - ‘chav’ single mum Vicky Pollard. It explores the comic treatment of this form of social classification through close qualitative textual analysis of Vicky’s physical characteristics, her use of language, her character ‘defects’, and the narratives in which she is embedded.
“It concludes with a consideration of how Vicky Pollard reproduces, or challenges, stereotypical portrayals of socially marginalised identities, and to what extent Little Britain reproduces conventional discourses of British television sketch shows. “
Sharon Lockyer is a Lecturer in Sociology and Communications at Brunel University. Her research interests cover the politics of popular culture, sociology of journalism, and media constructions of social problems. She is co-editor (with Michael Pickering) of Beyond a Joke: The Limits of Humour (2005, Palgrave) and she has published in Discourse & Society, Journalism Studies, International Journal of Social Research Methodology, and Ethical Space. She is currently editing a book entitled Reading Little Britain which will be published by I.B.Tauris in 2009.
