Extraordinary milestone achieved by student
A University of Leicester student has achieved an extraordinary milestone in her career by being selected for a prestigious national prize.
Portuguese PhD student Carla Lopes (image attached) won first prize in the poster competition at the annual national meeting for the British Society for Cell Biology.
Carla, of the Department of Biochemistry, is engaged in research on the structure of the human cell. Certain defects in these cells are linked to such devastating conditions as renal cystic diseases. Carla's particular research pertains to a developmental disorder that is also characterized by malformations of the face, oral cavity and digits.
Carla said: "I am extremely honoured for being awarded this prestigious prize by the British Society of Cell Biology. Having my research selected from amongst such a great amount of high quality work was indeed extraordinary and represents a milestone in my career since I first started researching in Portugal. I believe this achievement is a consequence of the amazing support that I am given by my supervisor Professor Andrew Fry and my colleagues here at the University of Leicester."
Professor Andrew Fry, of the Department of Biochemistry, said: "We're all very excited about Carla winning this prestigious award. She is an excellent student and a great team player and fully deserves this recognition of her careful research into what is a fascinating human disease. The prize of an all expenses paid trip to the American Society for Cell Biology meeting in San Francisco later this year will give her a great opportunity to present and discuss her work with the international cell biology community."
