Visitors to the University of Leicester for a free public open day on April 26 can expect an 'out of this world' experience.
The University is staging its biggest open day for a decade. Celebrate Leicester Day has events for all the family.
This includes: Are We Alone? - The Search for Extraterrestrial Life. Professor Martin Barstow, of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will talk about the real science behind the search for extra-terrestrial life.
He said: "This talk looks at the problems of detecting and communicating with other civilisations across the galaxy. It examines the prospects of finding life on other bodies in the Solar System and considers how life started on Earth in the first place."
Also in the Leicester University Department, visitors can see displays on work carried out by the Research Groups in X-ray and Observational Astronomy, Theoretical Astrophysics, Radio and Space Plasma Physics, Space Science and Instrumentation, Earth Observation Science and Condensed Matter Physics, together with a special display on 50 Years of Physics & Astronomy at Leicester, including a model of our latest satellite, Swift.
There are several demonstrations and hands-on activities such as "Build your own Comet", Mars Landers and CCD Detectors.
The department is also putting on a series of mini lectures including:
* 50 Years of Space Exploration at
Leicester
* Nanotechnology
* Meteorites
