A flat in Leicester has been boarded up for three months after the police and Leicester City Council obtained a crack house closure order.
Officers from Hinckley Road local policing unit executed a drugs warrant at the flat on Jarrom Street on Monday April 14 and served a closure notice under the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003.
At a court hearing on Tuesday April 15, officers and representatives from the Leicester Anti Social Behaviour Unit (LASBU) presented evidence to magistrates that the occupants of the flat were allegedly involved in supplying class ‘A' drugs. This included details of large numbers of callers to the property at all times of the day and night, drugs paraphernalia found in the area outside the flat and complaints from local residents about associated noise and a smell of drugs coming from the property.
Leicester Magistrates granted a crack house closure order which means the property will remain boarded up for the next three months. During this time anyone who enters the flat can be arrested.
Sergeant Steve Hutchings from Hinckley Road local policing unit was responsible for the police operation and the closure of the flat. He said: "I am extremely pleased that this order has been granted. The effect on local residents and businesses was significant and resulted in people being in fear of their safety.
"Contaminated needles and discarded paraphernalia could be regularly found in public areas of the flats, posing a risk to health. Locals were also intimidated by people loitering in the area and visiting the flat.
"The joint actions of the police, LASBU and Newarke Housing Association, combined with the information provided by residents, are an excellent example of neighbourhood policing and demonstrate how communities can act quickly to tackle crime and disorder. Officers have made several drug-related arrests in the area over the past few weeks and I hope this, together with the closure of this property, will send out a clear message that the use and dealing of drugs will not be tolerated.
"I would urge any other members of the community whose lives are being made a misery by drug dealers to let us know so that can do something about it."
Neil Canham, Manager of LASBU, said: "I am very pleased that we obtained the Order. The local residents can now have a better quality of life."
Councillor Culdip Bhatti, Cabinet lead for Community Safety and Housing said: "The residents had to put up with behaviour that is totally unacceptable. The people that came forward to help the police and Council stop this problem, deserve our thanks."
Leicester Newarke Housing Association, which owns the flat, will now seek a repossession order. Operations Manager Sue Lees said: "As the landlord we are very pleased with the outcome and the clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated."
