A CONFERENCE focusing on sexual health issues within faith communities has been welcomed by Leicester City Primary Care Trust (LCPCT).

Tomorrow’s conference (Thursday, April 10, 2008), entitled God and Sex – Wholly Unconnected Or Holy Connected, focuses on the role of sex and faith – and the need to take responsibility for safe practices.

Organised by Faith In People with HIV, a registered charity that provides pastoral care for people affected by the illness across Leicestershire and Rutland, the conference agenda has a strong emphasis on sexual health.

At a time when sexually transmitted disease is on the increase across the region, LCPCT believes increased awareness and education is the best form of defence.

Liz Rodrigo, a public health specialist at LCPCT, said: “Traditionally there have been some taboos within many faiths when dealing with health issues surrounding sex – which is why we particularly welcome this open approach to something which affects us all and needs to be addressed.”

The conference, which takes place at Leicester’s Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Granby Street, is co-chaired by The Rev Trevor Thurston-Smith, a city-based chaplain for people affected by HIV and the Rev Marion Chatterley, who does similar work in Edinburgh.

Rev Thurston-Smith commented: “Individuals often compartmentalise sexuality and faith because they struggle to make the connection between the two. Faith communities also struggle with this and tend to re-enforce the sense of disconnection.  This can undermine the potential for faith communities to play a positive role in the promotion of good sexual health.”

The conference, subtitled ‘The role of faith and spirituality in sexual health and healthy sex’, aims to begin an exploration of these issues and is an attempt to bridge the gulf that too often separates sexual health workers and faith communities, he added.

Areas explored during the conference will include:

• The realities of sexual behaviour today

• Why there are perceived tensions and conflicts between faith and sexuality

• The positive and negative potential impact of religious faith on self-image and its effect on sexual risk-taking

• Models of greater integration of sexuality and faith

• How faith communities need to adapt in order to address issues of sexual health more positively.

The forum has drawn participants from across the country and is aimed at faith leaders, healthcare chaplains, trainee clergy and medical students, sexual health advisors and clinicians, staff from voluntary and statutory agencies working in the sexual health field, and interested individuals.
