Noon on 26th April, the University of Leicester’s ‘Celebrate Leicester Day’, will be the moment when the region’s youngest inventors, from 5 to 16 years, will know who has won the University’s ‘Leicester Invents’ competition.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the University has called upon some of its own  experts to judge the winners in each of the three categories in the competition, to find the best and most ingenious inventions from the next generation.

Three prize-winners will each receive a Nintendo DS.   The overall prize-winner will receive a Nintendo Wii console and also win £200 of science equipment for his/her school.

Judges from among the University’s leading academics have been studying the entries, which they praised as displaying “unbridled imagination”.   They were looking for flair, creativity and originality in the design; and (for Years 6-9 and 10-11 only) evidence of some scientific or technological research.

Lucy Wade, of the University’s Schools and Colleges Service, commented:   “The University received over 450 entries from students from 60 schools and colleges across Leicestershire and Rutland.

“The entries received were of very high quality, and ranged from robotic homework helpers, to solutions to end global warming, to hover boards!  It was interesting to see in so many ways how the entrants had thought of solutions to the major concerns they face in every day life.

“Judges were chosen from academics from the faculties of Computer Science, Engineering and Chemistry, as these areas best reflected the inventions we had received.”

The winners will be announced and the prizes awarded at 12noon on Saturday 26th April in the Charles Wilson Building Belvoir City Lounge on the University’s main campus.

‘Celebrate Leicester Day’ is part of the University of Leicester’s 50th anniversary celebrations, when it opens its doors to the public, of all ages, who can come and enjoy displays, talks and interactive sessions on some of the research and discoveries that have made the University famous across the world.
