A prestigious new scholarship has been announced by the University of Leicester’s Department of Mathematics in memory of an outstanding former member of staff.

Professor Will Light was a former Head of Mathematics, Dean of Science and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester. He died suddenly, aged 52 in 2002.

Now, for the next academic year’s intake (2008/9) a single Will Light Scholarship of £3000 (towards the reduction of tuition fees) will be offered to an exceptional UK/EU applicant on a competitive basis. This scholarship is available by application only, with applications welcomed before 15th May 2008.

In the obituary for Professor Light, Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Burgess said: “Will Light established much in the relatively short time that he was part of the University’s Senior Management Team. He had the ability to engage in lateral thinking and to put ideas into action. He would also persuade people to follow his example and make a major contribution as he had a very engaging style which meant he could work effectively with many people…It is evident that his was a career with much promise.”

Head of Mathematics at Leicester, Professor Jeremy Levesley, said: “Will Light became head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Leicester in 1991. Under his guidance the department became one of the best research departments in the UK, and has continued to grow since his death in 2002.

“The excellent reputation of the Department in teaching followed from his fine example, and is testimony to the care he took with all his students. Will had great vision, and initiated the development of the MSc in Financial Mathematics and Computation at Leicester. His ex-PhD student, Dr Henry Wayne, from Citigroup now supervises internships of students on the degree. This demonstrates the loyalty that Will commanded.

“In honour of his contributions to this degree and to all of the Department's activities we have initiated the Will Light Scholarship for Home/EU students on the MSc in Financial Mathematics and Computation. This prestigious scholarship is worth £3000, and will be awarded only to a student of outstanding quality.”

  • To be considered for this scholarship an applicant should already possess an offer (conditional or unconditional) for a place on the programme.  In addition applicants are required to write a letter addressing why s/he should be considered for this prestigious scholarship.
