University of Leicester 2008 Sluckin Lecture
The distinguished scientist, Professor Anthony Dickinson FRS, will reveal new research into how - and whether - animals and birds recall the past and imagine the future in this year's Sluckin Lecture at the University of Leicester.
Anthony Dickinson, who holds the Chair of Comparative Psychology at University of Cambridge, works at the "biological end of psychology" throwing new light on the minds of both humans and animals. He has made internationally recognized contributions to the study of learning, memory and reasoning in humans and animals.
His pioneering work with Cambridge colleague Nicola Clayton on mental time travel in animals has presented the first clear evidence that animals can form episodic-like memory representations.
Achieving clearer insight into the psychology and neurobiology of the mind has potential benefits for human mental health and welfare. In particular, work on episodic memory, which is vulnerable to brain damage and ageing, may assist in establishing a neurobiological basis for memory and amnesia.
In addition, Professor Dickinson’s work demonstrating animals’ reasoning abilities and consciousness, has implications for animal welfare.
He commented: "Historically, scientists have thought that the ability to reason and take rational action is uniquely human. But our work has shown that some animals are able to take goal-directed action; that is to plan their future behaviour on the basis of the values of alternative goals. These values are determined by emotional reactions to the goals in primary consciousness."
This could impact on human-animal interactions in terms of how society governs animal welfare to ensure their physical and intellectual needs are satisfied.
Professor Dickinson was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2003.
The Annual Sluckin Lecture was inaugurated in 1991 in honour of the Division of Psychology’s highly respected and much loved former colleague, Wladek Sluckin, who was Professor of Psychology at University of Leicester from 1965 to 1984. Professor Sluckin’s principal research interest was animal behaviour.
This year’s Sluckin lecture by Professor Anthony Dickinson will take place in the Frank and Katherine May Lecture Theatre of the Henry Wellcome Building, Lancaster Road, Leicester, on Thursday 15th May at 4.30pm.
The lecture is open to the public and free of charge.
