A BID to have Leicester named as the country’s first cycling city is moving in the right direction. Leicester has been shortlisted for Cycling England’s Cycling Towns and Cities programme and, if successful, could secure the title and £6.75 million to transform cycling in and around the city.

The team behind the bid have now been invited to meet with Cycling England to discuss the plans and how they will be delivered.

Cllr Patrick Kitterick, city council cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve made the shortlist and that we are one step closer to being recognised as the country’s first cycling city.

“We are confident in the strength of our bid and success would help bring about ambitious improvements to cycle routes across Leicester and allow us to improve our already impressive record of helping people in the city to get out on their bikes.”

Leicester City Council worked with Leicestershire County Council to put together the bid. The two councils recently worked with partners to win £700,000 lottery funding towards the £1.4 million Connect2 scheme to improve Watermead Park’s cycle links.

Nicholas Rushton, deputy leader of the county council with responsibility for highways and transportation, said: “The bid is all about providing better transport options to workplaces, shops, schools and the countryside for around 750,000 people. The fact we have been shortlisted shows the benefits from the city and county councils’ approach to addressing transport issues together where we can.”

If the bid is successful, the cycling city cash will provide match funding to help achieve the following nine priorities by 2011:

• Address missing links in the cycle network, especially around the city centre • Continuous provision for on-road cycling along all major roads and key junctions • More secure cycle parking at key sites such as health centres, park and ride sites, schools and train station • Provide Bikeability cycle training for 80% of 11-year olds • Cycle training support as part of a health referral programme • Enhanced support for key projects including bike recycling, cycle maintenance training and special needs cycling projects • A new city cycle map and on line route finder • Targeted promotion of cycling and walking for hard to reach groups • A mass ride for schools and community groups as part of Special Olympics 2009.

Leicester City Council cycling officer Andy Salkeld said: “We have already had a tremendous response from local people and organisations willing to get behind our bid. The letters of support we have received have been a real boost and we are grateful to everyone who has already come forward. But there’s still time to get behind the bid by keeping the messages of support coming.”

Messages of support can be emailed to cycle-city@leicester.gov.uk, or sent to Cycle-city Workshop, c/o Leicester City Council, York House, 91 Granby Street, LE1 6FB, by no later than Friday 28th March.

Cycling England are expected to announce the winning towns and cities during National Bike Week, 7th to 15th June 2008.

Cycling England received 74 applications in total for competition to find the country’s first cycling city and 10 cycling towns.
