Take a walk to the oldest rocks in England

Free geological tour for members of the public at Bradgate Park near Loughbrough on Saturday 24 May 2008.

As part of the University of Leicester’s 50th anniversary programme, members of the public are invited to take a guided walking tour of Bradgate Park, to explore the fascinating geology of the oldest rocks in England with geologists from the University.

The tour, which will take place on Saturday 24th May, is expected to take 4-5 hours. Those taking part will visit the most significant outcrops and have a chance to discuss their importance in understanding the geological evolution of Leicestershire.

Tour leader, Dr Dickson Cunningham, Senior Lecturer in Tectonics at the University, commented: “The geology of Bradgate Park tells an ancient story of volcanoes, earthquakes, submarine landslides, mountain building and ice age glaciation. If you love the landscape arround Loughborough and the rest of NW Leicestershire, you will appreciate it even more if you understand its unique geological history.”

Participants will need to bring lunch, water, comfortable shoes and appropriate outer clothing for the weather on the day.

The tour will begin at 10.00am at the Bradgate Park boundary wall gate at the Hunts Hill Car Park, on the north-west wide of the park, near Old John. It is free of charge and there is no need to pre-book.

If anyone needs further information, they should contact Dr Cunningham on email wdc2@le.ac.uk
