Staff and students at the University of Leicester are celebrating as the University and Union achieve Fairtrade Status.

This follows a year of campaigning and efforts by the Students' Union, working alongside the University, to obtain the recognition.

Campaigns and Involvement Officer at the Students' Union Alex Smith said: "To obtain Fairtrade Status there are five objectives that need to be met. The overarching principle in these objectives is to increase the amount of Fairtrade products available on campus and to raise awareness about the Fairtrade campaign.

"Fairtrade Status means that we join the other 72 FE/HE institutions in the UK that already have the award. Now, having obtained it, the University needs to ensure that it keeps campaigning as the award is such that it needs to be reapplied for every year."

For Environmental Manager at the University, Dr Emma Fieldhouse, there was double cause for celebration. She said: "We wish to thank the University community for their involvement with the Estates Office in the implementation of the recycling scheme.

"We also heard that our Portering and Cleaning Service have won an award for the work that we've collectively done in rolling out the recycling scheme. The British Association of Cleaners in HE (BACHE) which covers UK higher education institutions have recognised us for the 'Best Environmental Initiative of 2007/8'.

"This would not have been possible without the combined effort from volunteers, coordinators and the Environmental Management Working Group all joining forces to make it happen.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you for the 600 hours of voluntary time that helped to make it happen as well as the great commitment from our cleaners and porters to making the scheme a success and to the Coordinators for fielding all the staff queries"
