The British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Association has named Dr Martha Lam as the winner of the Ray Bolam Doctoral Thesis Award 2008. This annual award is made to the individual whose thesis is deemed by a professorial panel to have made the most important contribution to an understanding of educational leadership and/or management and/or policy.
In announcing the award the Panel commended Dr Lam's thesis, entitled 'Senior Women Academics in Hong Kong: A life History Approach', for its "outstanding contribution not only to the field of female gender and management but also to theories of career development linked to notions of identity and socialisation."
They also complemented her for the "painstaking and detailed attention given to the methodological as well as substantive pathways to theory development."
Dr Lam said "I am very proud to be honoured with this award. I feel that this award was not just given as recognition of my thesis, but also of the quality of the Leicester EdD Program and of the high standards of teaching offered by the Leicester team. The best and the most treasured times were the many hours of intellectual discussion spent with my supervisor, Professor Clive Dimmock. His insistence on quality, rigour and originality in research was instrumental in honing my research skills."
Dr Lam's supervisor Professor Clive Dimmock said "Supervising such a bright student was exhilarating and a learning journey for me as much as for Martha. Martha's thesis was one of 10 shortlisted for the prize so winning it is a wonderful achievement for both her and the Doctoral Education programme in the School of Education. It is further evidence of the high standards we set for our students.
