Ryan Barnett (age12) with Dennis Kent and Jess Lofthouse (age 13)

Dennis Kent, Managing Director of Carlton Laser Services, has recently joined the board of Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC). To fully understand the work of LEBC and experience this at first hand Dennis volunteered to attend an Enterprise Day at Humphrey Perkins High School in Barrow on Soar.

“Having spent the day at Humphrey Perkins High School with a class of 12-13 year olds, I came away over whelmed. The sheer enthusiasm of these young students was gripping. How rewarding it was to see them turn in to stars, once switched on.

For me, the highlight was to see a young lad, where conventional class work appeared not work for him, yet in a space of a few hours his hidden talent was flushed out and unlocked.

He flourished and was recognised as the most “Enterprising” student of the day, I will not forget the expression on his face when his name was announced”, said Dennis.

Following some team building activities students were tasked with creating and running their own enterprises with the support of local business volunteers who joined the school for the day to support the event, including representatives from Taste of India, Lloyds TSB Bank, the Army, South Leicestershire College and Severn Trent.

The Enterprise Day, organised by LEBC for the end of term, enabled the students to develop and practice enterprising skills, in order to help better prepare them for their future place in the workforce.

Lucy Wake, Projector Co-ordinator for LEBC, said: “It is of huge value for students to be provided with the opportunity to work with representatives of the commercial world during the Enterprise Day, which gives them an insight to the various roles and functions within a business. We were delighted with the enthusiastic engagement of all who took part and are very grateful to the volunteers who gave up their working days to support the event.”

More companies and organisations are required to support enterprise learning in schools, if you would like to discuss further please contact Lucy Wake at LEBC on 0116 240 7000.
