n award-winning academic has been appointed as a lecturer in American Literature at the University of Leicester.
Dr Catherine Morley takes up her appointment in the School of English and Department of American Studies.
Dr Morley comes to the University of Leicester from an RCUK Academic Fellowship at Oxford Brookes University. Before this she was the Assistant Director of the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford. Born in Ireland in 1977, she completed her undergraduate and Masters work at University College Cork (NUI), where she was the first winner of the George Mitchell Peace Prize, enabling her to spend a year teaching and researching at the University of Maine.
Her doctoral research, which examined the quest for epic in contemporary American fiction, has just been published by Routledge. She has also published an edited collection of essays with Professor Martin Halliwell (English and American Studies at Leicester) entitled American Thought and Culture in the 21st Century, and another book of essays on American modernism is due to be published at the end of the year.
Dr Morley’s work has appeared in numerous scholarly journals and edited volumes, and most recently she has written a series of articles on fictional responses to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. She is currently working on an ambitious new project on the early twentieth-century American writer Willa Cather.
At Leicester, Catherine will lead courses on New York City in American fiction, masculinity in American writing, and ethnicity and diversity in American literature. She is also Tutor for the BA in English and American Studies; Careers Development Officer; a member of the American Studies Teaching and Planning and Student Consultative Committees; and a member of the Admissions team.
She is the Secretary of the British Association for American Studies (BAAS), the largest national institution of its kind outside the United States. She is also an active member of the Philip Roth Studies Association and the Modernist Studies Association.
