Pensioners living in Netherhall can enjoy a free taxi service to get them to the local shops, doctorâs surgery and post office.

The free service launches this week and will run free local shopping trips every Tuesday and Thursday. Visits to the doctorâs surgery and health centre can be booked throughout the week. The scheme, run by Dolphin Taxis is funded by Leicester City Council through the Humberstone and Hamilton ward community budget.

Cllr Ross Willmott, leader of the council welcomed the scheme. He said: âThis is the type of brilliantly simple scheme which the Ward Community Meetings were set up to achieve.

âI want to congratulate everyone involved in getting this up and running, especially local ward councillor Barbara Potter. The free taxi service is an excellent way to help people get to the local shops and other vital facilities and to keep local communities thrivingâ.

Cllr Potter suggested the scheme after First bus re-routed the number 38 service, leaving some residents having to walk a half-mile to their nearest stop, and others not able to reach the local doctorâs surgery or shops easily.

Cllr Potter said: âI was absolutely determined to get this taxi service up and running for local pensioners and people with disabilities. The funding of £4,000 through the area community budget means that people can keep their independence and we can help keep local shops and services runningâ.

The scheme also covers residents of Danbury Gardens in Humberstone to cover the gap left by change in bus route.

For more information about accessing the free taxi service contact Dolphin Taxis on 0116 243 3436.

Swim scheme welcomed

CITY council leader Ross Willmott has welcomed the governmentâ s announcement that it is to fund free swimming for everyone by 2012.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.

â We are proud that Leicester was ahead of the game in offering free swimming to over-60s two years ago, and are glad to see plans to extend that offer to children and eventually all adults too.
