PLANTING gets under way in Town Hall Square on Thursday (19th), in preparation for the visit of the Leicester in Bloom judges in July.
To mark the event the Cleaner City Team will hand out over 200 carnations to passers-by, in a bid to encourage them to play their part in the Leicester in Bloom competition.
Ian Lomas, Cleaner City Team manager, said: âItâs important to remember that Leicester in Bloom is about more than just flowers â itâs also about keeping the streets clean and tidy and showcasing the regeneration work taking place.
âBy handing out free flowers on Thursday, we hope to persuade people to think twice before dropping litter.â
The 200 carnations have been donated by Leicester Market and market traders.
The Cleaner City Team are a crack squad of council staff who patrol the streets armed with brooms, scrubbing brushes and buckets of water. The team does the jobs that street-cleaning machines canât do, such as washing down seats and wiping litterbins.
During June around 12,000 bedding plants will fill 280 hanging baskets and 125 troughs - all of the planting will highlight the regeneration works taking place across the city.
The city needs to look its best by Tuesday 15th July, when the Britain in Bloom judges will visit.
Leicester won gold and silver gilt awards in 2005 and 2006 and a further silver gilt award in the 2007 competition.
The city will represent the East Midlands in the urban regeneration category in this yearâs RHS Britain in Bloom competition.
