Information on Leicester

AFTER months of reading and voting the winner of Our Best Book 2008 will be announced at a special event to be attended by primary school pupils.

Pupils aged nine to 11 years from 35 primary schools across Leicester have taken part in the Our Best Book award scheme this year. Cllr Andy Connelly, cabinet lead for culture will announce the winner on Thursday 3rd July at 3pm at the Brite Centre, Braunstone.

Pete Johnson and Jeremy Strong, two of the short-listed authors, will be attending the ceremony and reading from their books.

Now in its third year, the award was set up by the councilâs library and learning services to support reading in primary schools. It aims to boast reading in primary-age children and get them reading for pleasure.

Cllr Connelly said: âI am delighted to be announcing the winner of Our Best Book. Interest in this award is growing every year. This year around 1600 pupils have taken part by reading the books from the shortlist and voting for their favourite.

âWith our libraries and schools working together on schemes like Our Best Book, we are definitely raising literacy standards and helping children to discover the joy of reading.

âA lot of people have worked very hard on the award, and like everyone else I canât wait to find out which of the short-listed books has been voted the winnerâ.

The five short-listed books are:

Artimis Fowl (the graphic novel) â Eoin Colfer

Beware Killer Tomatoes â Jeremy Strong

How Embarassing is That? â Pete Johnson

Kat got your Tongue â Lee Weatherly

The Invisible Manâs Socks â Alex Shearer.

A second reading award will be announced at the ceremony. Primary schools in Braunstone have also been voting for the Braunstone Book of the Year, which will be announced by Cllr Wayne Naylor.

PUPILS across the city are getting the chance to roll up their sleeves and take part in a prestigious gardening competition.

The cityâ s primary schools are being challenged to each create a minimum of two hanging baskets to display as part of the Leicester in Bloom 2008 competition.

Letters have gone out to all 81 city primary schools challenging pupils to get their hands dirty and get stuck into this yearâ s competition.

Stuart Marbrook, Leicester in Bloom co-ordinator, said: â The competition is a great way of educating children about nature and brightening up the playground at the same time.â

The Wilkinson store in Leicester is supporting Leicester in Bloom by sponsoring the hanging baskets and offering them to schools at a discounted price. Council park staff will also be on hand if required during June to help plant the baskets ready for the competition.
