READY, steady, go! A summer of reading gets underway with the launch of Team Read in city and county libraries.
Team Read Challenge will be launched by Cllr Andy Connelly Leicester City Councilâs cabinet lead for culture at a special event on Saturday 5th July at 1pm at the Walkers Stadium. Filbert Fox will be on hand to help give out the first Team Read packs to an invited audience of pupils from schools across the city and county.
Children and young people from Leicester and Leicestershire are invited to join in this yearâs summer reading scheme at their local libraries. Team Read aims to get children and young people reading over the school holidays with activities, events and reading challenges.
Cllr Connelly said: âThe summer reading scheme is an important part of the work our libraries do to encourage children to read. The summer holiday is an ideal time to catch-up on the latest books, and our staff have a great programme of activities to make sure reading is fun with the Team Read Challengeâ.
Cllr Ernie White, Leicestershire County Councilâs cabinet lead for community services said: âTeam Read is all about having fun and encouraging every child to be proud of their own reading achievements. Itâs free to join local libraries and thereâs something for all the family to enjoyâ.
Sport is the name of the game with themed reading packs available from libraries in the city and county. They contain everything children need to keep track of their summer reading, including reading charts and medal tables, games and puzzles, details of activities at libraries and other goodies.
Children are encouraged to read six books over the holiday and win bronze, silver and gold medals as they work their way through the Team Read Challenge. The scheme runs until 31st August in city libraries. While in the county it runs until 6th September.
The summer reading challenge gets bigger each year, with over 15,000 children participating in the city and county last year. Libraries staff look forward to welcoming even more children to the scheme this year.
Activities over the summer include crafts, story time, computer sessions and a team challenge for families. Thereâs a special event at Leicesterâs Central Lending Library as volunteers âTake Time to Readâ in the window. Leicestershireâs Weekly Workout is available in county libraries or online.
Under-4s have their own challenge with the Bookstart Book Crawl, which awards certificates and stickers as young children borrow books from the library.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people. Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012. Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun. â We are proud that Leicester was ahead of the game in offering free swimming to over-60s two years ago, and are glad to see plans to extend that offer to children and eventually all adults too. â By giving c... 06 Jun 2008 Swim scheme welcomed |
