NEW powers to tackle dog fouling and other dog-related problems in the city will be considered by the city councilâs Cabinet.
If they get final approval, the new Dog Control Orders would give the city council powers to hand out £80 fixed penalty notices to dog owners who fail to clear up petsâ faeces, allow them in restricted areas such as play areas or donât put them on a lead when instructed to do so.
Public consultation on the proposals took place in April and May. The proposals are part of a range of enforcement powers made available to councils under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
Leicester City Councilâs cabinet member for the environment, Councillor Rob Wann, said: âI am pleased that the response to the public consultation has been so positive and helpful both from people who own dogs and those who donât.
âThese new powers would allow us to tackle thoughtless or careless dog owners who allow their pets to foul or run free in areas where they should be kept under control on our streets and in our parks and play areas.
âWe need to balance the interests of people affected by the actions of dogs, such as children who need access to playgrounds and parks away from dogs, with the interests of dog owners who need access to areas where they can exercise their pets without undue restrictions.â
If approved the Dog Control Orders would come into force on 1st September. The council would run an awareness campaign over the summer, and install some 8000 signs in parks, play areas and on streets across the city to alert people to the new rules.
The Cabinet will consider the proposals when it meets at 1pm on Monday 14th July at the Town Hall.
