A READING scheme thatâs transforming the lives of children who have been struggling to read, is celebrating more success this week.
The city council has trained a further ten primary school teachers to provide specialist reading recovery teaching, as part of its âEvery Child a Readerâ scheme.
The Lord Mayor of Leicester Cllr Manjula Sood will present certificates to the teachers, and join in a celebration with pupils, teachers and parents, at New Parks House, Pindar Road on Wednesday (9th July).
The Reading Recovery scheme is aimed at six year-olds who struggle with literacy. It provides one-to-one, personally-tailored teaching to enable children to catch up with their classmates.
Cllr Vi Dempster, city council Cabinet member for children and young peopleâs services said: âBeing able to read and write is essential to a childâs confidence and life-chances. Reading Recovery teaching is given at a young age before failure sets in, and makes a massive difference to their progressâ.
Leicester now has 20 teachers trained in the Reading Recovery scheme. They have coached teaching assistants in their schools, which means between them theyâve been able to work with around 500 children over the past year.
Tony Whatmuff, a senior teacher who organises the scheme said: âBecause the training is intensive and takes one year, we can only train ten teachers annually. But within the next two years we will have enough specialist teachers to work in 40 primary schools. By working with teaching assistants this will be enough to help more than 1000 children every yearâ.
Leicester is one of the first cities to pilot the scheme, which is set to roll out across the region in September.
The celebration event will take place at New Parks House, Pindar Road, from 2pm to 2.40pm on Wednesday 9th July.
