NEW businesses which have benefited from a programme of help and advice will be recognised for their success at an awards ceremony.
Thirteen businesses from across the city were helped by a start-up programme which saw them getting expert advice on everything from drawing up business plans to applying for grants and funding.
Now those who have taken part in the scheme are being presented with Business Star Awards in a prestigious ceremony at Leicesterâs Athena Theatre, on Thursday, July 24.
The scheme â entitled Incubating Graduate Business (IGB) â ran from October 2007 until June 2008 and was aimed at helping recent graduates who want to start their own businesses.
The IGB project was managed by Leicester City Councilâs economic development team, with funding from the European Social Fund.
In all, 300 graduates took part in 15 workshops and advice events, which were organised with local universities, the Leicester Regeneration Company and the Overseas Qualification Development Service.
Business grants ranging from £250 to £1,200 were also handed out to the graduates.
Leicester City Councilâs cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Patrick Kitterick, said: âWithin our regeneration programmes we are working hard to ensure that graduates have access to high-quality business and career opportunities. The IGB programme is fundamental to our efforts in this area.â
IGB project manager Mab Akhter added: âOur graduate businesses have worked really hard in establishing themselves and deserve recognition and credit. I wish them every success.â
Speakers at the awards ceremony include Leicester City Councilâs policy and planning director Andrew Smith, chief executive of the East Midlands Incubation Network Russell Copley, and entrepreneur Kamran Munir, who previously worked as chief executive for a technology firm backed by former Dragonâs Den panellist Richard Farleigh.
