A MEDIEVAL church which was vandalised two months ago will be one of the main attractions on a series of tours of Leicesterâs historic sites.
The attack in June at St Margaretâs Church, in St Margaretâs Way, caused damage to religious items including art deco paintings, candlesticks, wooden altars and panelling and a stained-glass window.
However, worshippers at the 13th century church refused to let services be disrupted by the incident. The church was cleaned up, and will now feature in a series of guided walks highlighting the cityâs medieval heritage.
Visitors will be shown around the majestic church in the free event, which takes place on Monday, August 25, at 2.30pm. The event is part of the Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival, which also includes visits to the ancient St Mary De Castro Church, St Nicholas Church and Leicester Castle.
Canon Barry Naylor, the priest at St Margaretâs Church, said: âWeâve worked really hard to get the church cleaned up and to ensure that church life and worship would continue and not be disrupted by this incident.
âAll the superficial damage has been sorted out, and the main structure of the church, along with much of its beauty and splendour is still here for visitors to enjoy.â
Leicester City Councilâs cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Andy Connelly, said: âItâs very encouraging to see that this church has recovered from the vandalism it has suffered and is able to take part in the Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival.
âThe city has a fascinating history and these guide walks are a great chance for people to learn more about it.â
The Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival takes place from August 18 to 25, and includes a wide variety of events focusing on history, music, arts and culture.
Full details are available at www.leicester.gov.uk/castlepark or in festival brochures which are available at the Tourist Information Centre, libraries, museums and leisure centres across the city.
