CHOOLS in Leicester are celebrating a massive achievement today, with 41% of city students achieving five or more good GCSEs (grade A* to C) including English and mathematics.
This is a big improvement on last yearâs total of 36%, and means schools have hit their challenging improvement target. The figures are provisional and are expected to rise when the results of other qualifications, equivalent to GCSEs are published in the next two weeks.
Cllr Vi Dempster, Cabinet member for education said: âThese are excellent results and reflect the enormous amount of hard work that has gone in from schools, students and the council.
âOur targets were extremely challenging, but we have risen to them, and congratulations must go to all concerned. We must now ensure this rate of improvement continues across the city.
âThanks to the partnerships we have created over the past year, we are confident that these improvements are sustainable, and the hard work will now continue.â
The number of students achieving five A* to C grade GCSEs overall is currently around 52%.
In each of the past three years, the results for five A*-C grades including mathematics and English have improved. In 2005 they were at 31%, which means this year an additional 350 students have reached the benchmark figure.
Andrew Bunyan, corporate director for children and young peopleâs services said: âI really congratulate all the students and their teachers. I am confident that these interim results will rise, as more students are taking courses equivalent to GCSE either in their own school or at another school or college.
âThe results from these important courses, some of which are worth two or more GCSEs are not all available today. We are pleased that even more young people are leaving school with good qualifications to enter further education and trainingâ.
The final figures will be available in January 2009 when they are published by the Department for Children, Families and Schools.
