Information on Leicester

WITH a week to go before Highcross Leicester opens its doors for the first time, the city is getting ready to welcome plenty of extra visitors.

A series of signs on the main approach roads to the city will direct motorists to the nearest available parking space, additional park and ride services have been arranged, and local bus companies are ready to cope with the extra passengers wanting to experience the new-look city centre.

âWeâre expecting lots of extra people to enjoy the shops and facilities in our new-look city centre over the coming weeks and months â and weâre looking forward to welcoming them to Leicester,â said Cllr Patrick Kitterick, cabinet member for regeneration.

âWe want to make sure that their experience is one that theyâll want to repeat, so weâre working closely with the bus companies and the people at Highcross to ensure that weâre ready for them.â

When Highcross Leicester opens on September 4th, people living locally are being encouraged to leave their cars at home â if they can â and to travel to the city centre by bus. All buses will drop passengers off within walking distance of the new development, with some services stopping directly outside the new John Lewis store.

Those driving from further afield should consider using the specially extended range of park and ride services.

Park and ride will be available seven days a week from Meynellâs Gorse, with a new Sunday service starting on September 7th. Bus frequency has been improved, with buses leaving Meynellâs Gorse every 10-15 minutes â and with the last bus leaving the city centre at 9pm from Monday-Saturday.

A special park and ride service will operate from Oadby Racecourse on September 4th and 5th, dropping shoppers off in Charles Street, close to Highcross Leicester. And a new Sunday service will be provided from September 7th, in addition to the Racecourseâs regular Saturday service.

The County Hall park and ride service â which normally operates on Saturdays only â will also provide a Sunday service from September 7th.

Single deck buses will be replaced with double deckers on the County Hall and Racecourse routes to meet the extra demand.

And two special park and ride services will operate from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th from the National Space Centre and the Walkerâs Stadium.

For those driving in to town, fixed signs on the main approach roads will guide them to the nearest parking space. And around the ring road, electronic messaging signs will direct drivers to one of the cityâs 10 multi-storey car parks â all of them, including Abbey Street and Lee Circle, just a short walk from Highcross Leicester and the other city centre shops.

âFrom September 4th, thereâll be a total of 9,500 off-street parking spaces in Leicester, with another 1,300 on-street spaces,â said Cllr Kitterick.

âDemand for parking at the new John Lewis, Highcross and Haymarket car parks will inevitably be high, so I would urge drivers to make use of the space thatâs available in the cityâs other car parks. If you follow the electronic signs, or listen to the traffic bulletins on BBC Radio Leicester, youâll be guided to the nearest available space.â

With its late-night opening shops, and with restaurants and a cinema open till late, Highcross will give a huge boost to the cityâs night-time economy. And with people travelling home later than before, local bus companies will be monitoring demand for evening services closely.

âHighcross will have a big impact on peopleâs routines, with more people making the most of late-night shopping and dining,â said Steve Zanker of First Leicester.

âWe will be carefully monitoring the longer term transport requirements to meet the inevitable rise in demand. During the first few days, additional resources will be made available â particularly at off peak times â to cope with the anticipated increase in passenger numbers.â

Highcross Leicester will open its doors at 10.10am on Thursday September 4th, with a day-long launch starting at 9.45am. Events to mark the opening â including street entertainment, parades and a spectacular light show â will continue until 10pm.
