Information on Leicester

ROADS in parts of Leicester city centre are due to close briefly to allow changes to be made to bus stops and the direction of traffic flow.

On Sunday, August 31, a series of temporary road closures will take place to allow changes to be made to the locations of some bus stops. The changes will also mean some alterations to traffic flow and the installation of new traffic signs and road markings.

The changes come ahead of the opening of the prestigious Highcross Leicester shopping and entertainment complex on September 4.

On the Sunday, Church Gate, Haymarket and Belgrave Gate will close for changes to traffic signs and markings in order for the flow of traffic to be permanently reversed. The Haymarket car park will remain open as normal and will be accessible throughout the work.

Work will also be carried out to make St Peterâs Lane two-way, and to make the exit from Causeway Lane onto the central ring road into a single lane for all traffic.

Hotel Street will also be closed on Sunday at its junction with Market Place South to enable resurfacing works to take place on Sunday. Diversions will be signposted along Market Place, Cheapside and Cank Street.

A number of bus stops will be temporarily moved while Sundayâs work takes place. The number 18 and 70 services will now leave from Abbey Street, the services 50/50A and 51/51A will leave from stand C7 at the Haymarket Bus station, and the 104 service will depart from the Haymarketâs stand C2.

These changes will only apply on that Sunday and will return to normal afterwards. A range of other traffic diversions will take place in the city centre.

On Monday, September 1, bus passengers will be able to use the newly-located bus stops across the city centre for the first time. The new bus stops will be placed on the opposite side of Haymarket, and in Church Gate, St Peters Lane and Causeway Lane.

Signs will be put up across the area to advise drivers of closures and the diversions which are in place.

The works are the final stages of Leicester City Councilâs multi-million pound Streets and Spaces scheme to regenerate the city centre. The last stages of the city centre work are due to be completed at Market Place Approach, Halford Street and Granby Street on Wednesday, September 3, with the final roads re-opening to traffic the following day.
