Information on Leicester

A HUGE variety of mouth-watering foods will take centre stage at a popular food fair this month.

Belgrave Hall and Gardens will host the third annual Belgrave Hall Good Food Fair, on the weekend of September 20 and 21, from 11am to 4pm daily.

Saturday will include family-friendly events looking at food from the past, with tastings, talks and have-a-go sessions for visitors, while the Sunday will showcase organic producers from across the region. On both days, visitors will be able to sample local fresh produce.

Producers taking part on both days of the event include Pickâs Organic Farm Shop, Corner Plot vegetables, the Witchâs Garden fragrant herbs, Bobbyâs fine Gujarati cuisine, and Raw N Pure organic growers.

Saturdayâs attractions include mouth-watering Squisito Ice Cream, the Heritage Seed Library, livestock from Leicesterâs Gorse Hill City Farm, and cooking demonstrations from Leicester College.

On Sunday, Gopsall Fresh Farmhouse Ice Creams will introduce visitors to flavours including apple crumble, raspberry pavlova and whisky and ginger, alongside more well-know varieties.

Also on Sunday, Chocolate Euphoria will present luxury Belgian chocolates, truffles, caramel, gift sets and hampers, 80 per cent of which are made from local produce. Lilliput Preserves will treat visitors to freshly made seasonal chutneys, jams and pickles.

Visitors will be able to learn about traditional apple varieties, home-made apple cake and get tips on growing apples in a talk by produce expert Sally Cunningham.

Throughout the weekend here will be demonstrations of traditional cooking methods, and stalls run by Leicestershire and Rutland Country Markets, Soyfoods, Peppercorn Catering and The Seasonal Pudding Company.

Leicester City Councilâs cabinet member for culture and leisure, Cllr Andy Connelly, said: âLeicester and Leicestershire are renowned for some fantastic locally-grown organic produce, and this event will showcase some of the best on offer.

âThere is definitely something for every taste, so itâs a wonderful opportunity to see what the area has to offer, all in the surroundings of one of the cityâs best-known historic halls and gardens. I canât wait to go along and sample whatâs on offer.â

Leicestershire and District Woodcraft Folk will be running a wood-fired pizza oven and pedal-powered smoothie maker throughout the weekend.

Entry to the food fair is free, and free parking is available at Jelsons in Loughborough Road, a few minutesâ walk from Belgrave Hall and Gardens. Disabled parking is available at the hall itself.
