Police in Leicester city centre have something to shout about Inspector Chris Brown with Town Crier Tony Green

Inspector Chris Brown with Town Crier Tony Green

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Police in Leicester city centre have enlisted the services of the town crier to help get crime prevention messages across to Christmas shoppers.

Officers came up with the idea after an increase in the number of purse thefts in the city centre in recent weeks. As well as reminding shoppers to secure their purses and handbags, the town crier will offer other festive crime prevention messages relating to drink driving, vehicle security and personal safety while on a night out.

Inspector Chris Brown, commander of the City Centre local policing unit, said: "We were looking for an innovative way to get crime prevention messages across to the public and the town crier seemed the perfect solution. When the town crier speaks, people stop and listen! His traditional attire of a bright blue suit, frilly shirt and white tights also attracts a lot of attention.

"The reaction from shoppers in the city centre this morning was very positive and we will be using the services of the town crier on two more occasions in the run up to Christmas to try to reach as many people as possible."

Tony Green, who has been the Town and Market Crier for Leicester for over 20 years, said: "I am delighted to be able to help the police in this way. It is my civic duty to help protect the good citizens of Leicester."

The town crier was accompanied by police community support officers who handed out purse bells and chains to shoppers to enable them to attach their purses to their handbags. The bells and chains have been funded by the Leicester Joint Action Group which is made up of representatives from the police, partner agencies, retailers and the community.

An elderly shopper called Lily said: "I think this is a great idea, especially for people in their eighties like me. The town crier is a really good way to make people stop and listen."

Leicestershire Constabulary has the following advice for shoppers:

  • Never leave a handbag or purse unattended and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep your handbag firmly zipped shut or closed and on your person at all times.
  • Wear shoulder bags with the opening against your body.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Only keep items in your bag that are needed.
  • Keep your cash card separate from your cheque book.

Purse chains and bells are available from the Front Enquiry Office of Mansfield House police station on Belgrave Gate in Leicester.
