Cabinet Office
A team could be set up to launch a “firm but fair” approach to travellers in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.
Leicestershire County Council may join forces with other authorities, the police and health service, to deal with unauthorised camps more effectively.
At the moment, there is no single approach to dealing with unauthorised encampments in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. This means it can take varying amounts of time to move them on, depending on where they are.
Now, Leicestershire County Council wants to follow the example of Northamptonshire, where the creation of a countywide travellers’ unit has led to a huge improvement in travellers’ behaviour.
Brian Page, Cabinet member for property, said: “We hope that councils in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland can work together, to launch this team and reduce the area’s problems with unauthorised camps.”
The proposed team would include the County Council, the District Councils, Leicester City and Rutland, the police and the Primary Care Trust – all of which have agreed in principle to the move.
The team would:
• Act as a single point of contact for traveller issues
• Adopt a “firm but fair” approach to travellers across the entire area
• Improve services for travellers and the settled population
• Enable members to pool information
Improve public confidence in neighbourhoods
If approved, the new team could cost around £250,000 per year, from existing budgets. It is hoped that the team would be jointly funded by all the local authorities in Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland.
Leicestershire’s ruling Cabinet will discuss the report at 2.30pm on November 14.
