11 November 2008 Nominate your young achiever of the year

Successful young people are being sought for this year’s Lord-Lieutenant’s award scheme.

Jennifer, Lady Gretton, wants to find out about the best examples of achievement by young people in Leicester and Leicestershire.

The awards are in their third year, and are open to young people aged from 13 to 19 years old.

Lady Gretton said: Young people do so much for society and these awards recognise that contribution.

I want to reward young people who have been exceptional in any of the award categories and I would also like to thank our award supporters.”

There are five categories for nomination, including a new creativity and innovation section.

  • Bravery - overcoming personal barriers to achieve success, making a stand against bullying, racism etc, or a life-saving act of bravery.
  • Kindness in helping others - supporting an elderly neighbour or relative, fund-raising, etc.
  • Improving the community - commitment to improving their school, community or local environment.
  • A voice for young people - contribution to promoting the views of children and young people in decision making.
  • Creativity and innovation - demonstrating fresh thinking and new ideas in the arts, music, engineering or computing.

The young person can be nominated by other young people, their school, parent or carer or any other agency.

There will be separate awards for each category and one winner will be announced as the Lord-Lieutenant’s Young Person of the Year.

Last year’s winner was Jaspreet Kaur Aulakh who was chosen for her kindness in helping others.

Nominators are asked to suggest an appropriate prize to the value of £500 which is beneficial to the nominee’s interest, studies or future employment.

To nominate for this year’s awards, go to the County Council’s website: www.leics.gov.uk/lieutenancy or www.theJitty.com or request a form from: Lieutenancy Office, County Hall, Glenfield, Leicestershire, LE3 8RA.
