21 November 2008 Young people broadcast anti-bullying message on radio

Five talented young writers are having their anti-bullying messages broadcast on the radio.

The young people won a competition run by Leicestershire County Council and BBC Radio Leicester to write and perform a monologue about bullying.

It could be entirely fictional or based on real experiences and judges were looking for a monologue about eight minutes long with engaging and powerful opinions.

The winners have recorded their pieces at Radio Leicester's studios and soundbites from the monologues are being broadcast during Anti-Bullying Week, which runs until today (Friday 21st November 2008).

Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for the Children and Young People's Service said: "This is a great opportunity to get the message out during Anti-Bullying Week that bullying in our schools will not be tolerated and is not acceptable."

The winning young people are:

  • Nick Furlong, Melton College
  • Joseph Holmes, Longslade Community College
  • Corey Shayers, King Edward VII College, Coalville – read by Jordan Cope
  • Jordan Mcllwraith, KE VII College, Coalville – read by Robert Trott
  • Bryony Luther, KE VII College, Coalville – read by Stephanie Mclaine

The full monologues, and more information about anti-bullying, can be found on the County Council's new website: www.beyondbullying.com and on Radio Le.icester's website www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/local_radio.
