16 December 2008 Hat trick for Junior Road Safety Officers

Football supporters have been given a seasonal reminder not to drink and drive this Christmas.

The County Council’s Road Safety and Travel Awareness Team, and four Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) teamed up with Leicester City Football Club to promote road safety at the last home game against Southend United.

JRSOs promote road safety in their schools and won the chance to attend the game as VIP guests through a countywide competition to come up with a recipe for a non-alcoholic cocktail.

The children enjoyed a behind the scenes tour with Leicester legend Steve Walsh, chatted to club Chairman Milan Mandaric about their role as JRSOs, before joining Captain Matt Oakley in the centre circle before kick-off.

At the event the crowd were reminded of the dangers of drinking and driving with messages displayed around the stadium.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council, said: "Sadly there are some drivers who are selfish enough to risk their own lives and the lives of other people by continuing to drink and drive.

"By getting the message out to large groups of people, such as a football crowd, it is hoped that attitudes and behaviour will be changed, ultimately making the roads of Leicestershire safer for everyone.”

The JRSOs were delighted to be presented with framed copies of their winning entries from Steve Walsh, and had a fantastic afternoon – topped by seeing City beat Southend 3-0 thanks to a Matty Fryatt hat trick.
