1 December 2008 Young performers star in The Nutcracker

Over 300 young performers from Leicester and Leicestershire are taking part in a production of The Nutcracker tonight.

The performance at De Montfort Hall features students from Leicester-Shire Arts in Education and is the final event in a special year for the partnership.

Leicester-Shire Arts in Education is a partnership between the County Council and Leicester City Council and is celebrating its 60th anniversary year.

Set up in 1948 with one youth orchestra, there are now opportunities for young musicians in three youth orchestras, two large string ensembles, two steel bands, four wind bands, two big bands and many smaller ensembles.

The celebratory year has also been an opportunity to involve large numbers of young people not only in performing, but in forming audiences for matinee and workshop events. Over 1,500 young people from schools have attended performances by youth bands and orchestras.

Over 300 young performers from the City and County are participating in this production: Leicester-Shire Schools Symphony Orchestra, Leicester-Shire Arts Training Orchestra, Leicester-Shire Arts Youth Ballet and Schools Ballet Scheme, and Leicester-Shire Arts Youth Choir.

The production of The Nutcracker is at 7.30pm tonight (1st December) at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.

Notes:

The celebratory events in 2008 have featured an outstanding programme of concerts for all our bands and orchestras and this production of The Nutcracker shows the strength of a combined Arts Service in music and in dance.

The music tradition began in 1948 but Leicester-Shire Arts in Education also has a very proud tradition of Youth Dance and Ballet which started in 1976 and continues to thrive today.

We are extremely grateful to the sponsors of our anniversary year who have made these matinée events possible through sponsorship of tickets for schools and also to those sponsors who have directly supported this production: Freeds of London; Leicestershire branch of NASUWT; Alan and Jean Gayton Charitable Trust; Sir Andrew Martin Trust for Young People; The Friends of Arts in Education.
