Distraction burglaries in Belton and Whitwick

Officers from North West Leicestershire are appealing for witnesses following burglaries in the Belton and Whitwick areas on Wednesday January 14.

The first incident happened at around 7.30pm when two men entered an address on Rempstone Road in Belton after claiming to be from the water board.

Once inside the property, the men made a search of the lounge and the victim asked them to leave when she realised they were not genuine callers. Nothing was stolen from the 90-year-old occupant's house.

The suspect has been described as white, in his early twenties, around 5'9" tall and of medium build. He was wearing a black coat and a trilby style hat. The second man is described as white, in his early twenties, around 5'10" tall and of medium build. He had a round face and was wearing a grey woolly hat.

The second incident happened at around 8pm when the elderly resident was in his lounge on Carterdale in Whitwick.

A woman appeared in the room who claimed there was an incident on the street and she needed to check his water. They went into the kitchen and were joined by a man who started to check the kitchen taps.

The victim, in his eighties, became suspicious and began to question them. They left empty handed. There are no descriptions of the suspects.

The third incident happened at around 8.05pm when a man entered a home on Carterdale in Whitwick claiming to be dealing with an incident on the street and needing to check the water. A second man was seen standing on the driveway.

He proceeded to check the taps in the kitchen before going upstairs with the victim to check the bathroom. After he left the victim, in her seventies, discovered her purse had been taken with around £150 of cash and cards.

The first suspect was described as white, around 5'7" tall and of slim build. He was wearing a dark jacket a woolly hat. The second is described as white, around 5'10" tall and of medium build. He was wearing a woolly hat.

Detective Constable Paul Davies, who is investigating these incidents, said: "Unfortunately, there are people out there who will use any number of false stories in order to get into a home and people need to be mindful of this.

"If you don't know the person knocking on your door, don't let them in. If you live in warden assisted housing, ask them to come back when a warden is present. If you don't, then tell them to come back when a family member is there.

"Any genuine caller will not mind re-arranging their visit. These criminals will use any story to make themselves appear plausible. Remember, there is no such thing as the ‘water board'.

"I am appealing for anyone who may have seen these people in these areas or witnessed anything that could be in relation to these burglaries to please get in contact with us."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 291 Paul Davies on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0291. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile ‘phone service providers may charge for this call.
