Appealing following robbery in Beaumont Leys

Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a cash handling centre in Beaumont Leys.

The incident happened at around 5:45pm yesterday (Friday 23 January) when four men broke into the Loomis building on Sheene Road, Gorse Hill Industrial Estate.

The offenders used a stolen yellow JCB Telehandler to gain entry to the property. Three males, wearing blue boiler suits, one wearing a balaclava and the other two wearing crash helmets demanded money from staff. They were carrying what is believed to have been a firearm. It is not clear at this stage how much cash was taken.

Two staff received minor injuries during the robbery and were treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Gary Rogers, who is investigating the incident, said: "Fortunately no-one was seriously injured but this was a terrifying experience for the staff".

"We are particularly interested to hear from anyone who may have seen the JCB, stolen a short time before the robbery, from Broombriggs Road on the new Bradgate Heights housing estate situated off Glenfrith Way, adjacent to Glenfield Hospital. The JCB was set on fire and left behind at the scene of the robbery.

"We also believe the suspects made off in a blue, five door, Ford Focus ST, 2006 model. This vehicle was found abandoned and on fire after the robbery on Buddon Close, again on the new Bradgate Heights housing estate".

"We are keen to speak to anyone who was in and around the Gorse Hill Industrial Estate at around 5:45pm and may have information. Many people would have been leaving work at this time.  We would also like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity on the Bradgate Heights housing estate, particularly the route in and out of the estate from Buddon Close and Broombriggs Road before and after the robbery.

"Any information you have could be crucial so please get in touch."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact DS 414 Gary Rogers from City Serious Crime Team on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in his identification number 0414. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers free* and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
