A new Inspector takes command in Rutland
A new Inspector is taking over the reins at Rutland Local Policing Unit.
Inspector Johnny Monks will take over from Inspector Sarah Cox on Monday 2nd February 2009. Inspector Cox, who has led the police in Rutland since April 2007, is leaving to take up a role as a Detective Inspector in the Force's Major Crime Unit.
Inspector Monks joined Leicestershire Constabulary in 1989 and worked as a Police Constable for five years in Charnwood and Leicester city before becoming a Sergeant in 1994. During his ten years as a Sergeant he worked in a variety of different roles at Hamilton, Melton and Rutland. He has worked as a Shift Sergeant, a Custody Sergeant and was a Detective Sergeant in CID for three years and was the Deputy Commander at Melton Police station for a year. He was promoted to Inspector in 2004 and worked as an Operational Command Inspector, responding to incidents across the former East Area, until six months ago in June 2008 when he moved to Loughborough to run a number of special projects for the North Area.
Inspector Monks said; "I am really looking forward to the challenge of running a local policing unit and getting to know the people, communities and partners across the county of Rutland. I am no stranger to Rutland as I was a Sergeant at Oakham Police Station for about four months. I chose to come to Rutland and look forward to continuing all the good work that has been done under Inspector Cox's leadership.
"The key thing for me is to ensure the people who live and work in Rutland feel safe. Rutland is a low crime area and I hope to keep it that way by dealing robustly with the people who commit crime in the county. Customer satisfaction and confidence are also very important to me. I will be striving to improve customer satisfaction and build community confidence at Rutland and I see this as two key areas of business for the police over the next five years. Rutland has a great team of officers who are as committed as I am to delivering a first class police service and building community confidence, ensuring Rutland stays a safe place to work and live.
"It will be a privilege to work and serve the Rutland community and I want people to contact me by phone, email or in person if they have any issues they would like to discuss."
Inspector Sarah Cox said; "It has been a wonderful challenge for me to develop as an officer but also to try and bring the personal touch to policing in Rutland. I have tried to make policing here open, accessible and of a high standard. Rutland has been a huge part of my life in the last two years and I don't regret a minute of it. Serving a community where you feel so much for the people that live there is a pleasure and that has driven me to try and achieve more for everyone. It hasn't quite sunk in that I am leaving yet.
"I have known Inspector Monks for years and I am sure that he will continue with the principals that I hold dear, but he is also bursting with new ideas of his own about policing in Rutland."
Inspector Monks lives in the Vale of Belvoir, is married and has three children. His interests include sailing and cycling and he has done a number of challenges to raise money for charity including sponsored bike rides and he's sailed across the Atlantic to the Azores to raise money for an orphanage in Sri Lanka.
