Team of Special Police Constables tackle problems in Birstall
Reports of anti-social behaviour in Birstall have dropped by 60% thanks to work done by the police, youth workers and local councillors in the village.
There have been 20 incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB) reported to the police between Tuesday 18th November 2008 and Tuesday 10th January 2009 compared to 52 incidents in the previous 53 day period. (25/09/08-17/11/08) The calls mainly refer to complaints about large groups of young people hanging around in the village causing a nuisance and committing criminal damage such as vandalism and graffiti.
Operation Loft was launched on the 18th November 2008 to tackle the issues. As part of that operation, the Special Police Constables who are based at Syston have been working on an ASB Management Project led by Section Officer Phil Roberts who has just been named Special of the Year. He and his officers have been carrying out high visibility patrols in hotspot locations to reduce alcohol related crime and ASB. They have been talking to the young people and promoting other activities in the area. SPCs have been making frequent visits to licensed premises, confiscating alcohol from the under 18s and issuing dispersal notices.
The Specials and regular officers have also been working alongside an IMPACT Team from Leicestershire Youth Offending Service, which is made up of street-based workers who speak directly to youngsters on evenings and weekends about anti-social behaviour issues.
The emphasis of the joint campaign has been on education, and members of the IMPACT Team, along with police officers, have worked to develop a positive relationship with the teenagers and look at ways of encouraging them to use local facilities.
They are liaising with the Joint Action Group, which is chaired by the police, to look at longer term ways of addressing problems such as underage drinking, vandalism and graffiti based on incidents reported by the public.
Sergeant Marcus Lee, from Charnwood Local Policing Unit said; "There are still some largish groups of young people gathering in the village but they are not committing criminal offences. Our campaign has been focussed on education; on engaging with them and trying to make them see what affect their behaviour has on local residents and businesses.
"We've also been visiting local pubs and off licenses to make sure they are complying with the licensing laws by asking for identification from anyone they suspect are underage. The work the Special's have done in the village has been invaluable and have made a great contribution to the achieving the reduction in offences that we have seen."
Sergeant Marcus Lee continued; "It is important that people report incidents of anti-social behaviour because if we don't know about them, we can't address them but it certainly seems as though our joint efforts are making a big difference."
Anyone who wants to report drunk or rowdy behaviour, vandalism or graffiti, threatening or abusive behaviour or drug-related anti-social behaviour can call the police on Leicester (0116) 222 2222.
