Police in Leicester appeal for public's help to prevent underage drinking
Do you know of an off-licence or pub that sells alcohol to young people under the age of 18? If so police in Leicester want to hear from you.
Ahead of half term week, police are appealing for the public's help to identify those premises selling alcohol to children. The appeal forms part of a three-month city-wide campaign to tackle underage drinking, alcohol-fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour.
The campaign, known as Operation Nameplate, will run till the end of March 2009 and includes test purchase operations at off-licences pubs and clubs; enforcement of street drinking bans and dispersal orders; the confiscation of alcohol and the review of licences where appropriate. It has been funded by the Home Office.
Chief Inspector Andy Sharp said: "We are appealing for the public's help with this campaign, particularly during the half term school holidays in Leicester.
"We know that underage drinking and associated noise, criminal damage and other anti-social behaviour is a concern for many of our communities. Please help us to prevent underage drinking by informing the police if you know of a pub or off-licence that sells alcohol to under-18s. With your information we will be able to monitor the premises and take the appropriate action. As a result of test purchase operations carried out so far as part of Operation Nameplate, six off-licences now face a review and could lose their licence to sell alcohol.
"If you have information about underage drinking but wish to remain anonymous then please call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111 and they will pass your information to us."
As part of Operation Nameplate, letters reminding those involved in the sale of alcohol of their responsibilities have been hand delivered to all licence holders in the city. To date, officers have carried out two test purchase operations using a 15-year-old girl posing as a customer. A total of 33 premises were visited as part of these operations, including 21 off-licences and 12 pubs. Of those eight off-licences and four pubs sold alcohol to the underage test purchaser.
Six premises will now face a review of their licence before Leicester City Council Licensing Committee as they had previously failed a similar test purchase operation. In all cases the sales assistant who sold the alcohol to the test purchaser was issued with an £80 fine.
If you have information about a premises selling alcohol to under-18s please call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
* Please note some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
