Man sentenced for firearms offence

A Leicester man has been sentenced to five years imprisonment after discharging a firearm.

Mark McIntosh (29) of Lancashire Street, Leicester, was sentenced on Monday at Leicester Crown Court after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited firearm.

This was following an incident on Friday, August 8 2008 at a business premises on St Stephens Road when McIntosh discharged a shotgun.

Detective Sergeant David Speight of Leicestershire Constabulary said: "Thankfully no one was injured during this incident.  However, the gun was fired with a total disregard for the harm that may have been caused.

"The discharge of a firearm is rare and we treat any incident of this type extremely seriously.

"I hope this reassures members of the public that a prohibited firearm is off the streets and the person who possessed it is now serving a prison sentence.

"It should also send out a strong message to other criminals that we take these kinds of offences seriously and we will do everything we can to put you before the courts."
