Appeal after man injured intervening during an altercation

Officers are appealing for witnesses after a man was injured intervening during an altercation.

The incident happened at around 2.15am in the early hours of Sunday February 1, 2009 on Bowling Green Street.

The 27-year-old victim was standing waiting for a taxi when he became of a silver Toyota Avensis pull up on the opposite side of the road containing three men. Two of the occupants got out and began an altercation with a man walking past.

One of victim's friends went over to intervene and after the victim crossed the road to assist him, he was hit by the Avensis which had turned around, reversed up the street and mounted the pavement.

The vehicle made of along Halford Street after the incident.

The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries but did not attend hospital for treatment.

Two men aged 19 and 20 have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

PC Waheed Nagdi, who is investigating the incident, said: "Thankfully the victim was not more seriously injured, but the consequences could have been far worse.

"We know that there were several people in the area making thier way home after a night out who have witnessed this incident or the events leading up to it.

"It is important anyone who has any information contacts us as soon as possible."
