Robbery on Humberstone Lane- UPDATED at 10.40am 19/02/09

Police are investigating a robbery which happened on Humberstone Lane in Thurmaston close to The Roundway.

Officers were called at 11.24am today (Monday February 16) after a man in his mid thirties, who had just been to a nearby bank, was assaulted by two men who made off with his rucksack. One of them hit the man with an implement similar to a baseball bat. He did not seek medical treatment.

The men left the scene together on a motorbike riding pillion. They are reported to have been wearing orange biker jackets, jeans and motorcycle helmets.

It's believed they may have then made their way to the car park of the Hope and Anchor pub on Wanlip Road in Syston, arriving there at around 11.40am.

One of the men got off the bike and got into the driver's seat of a silver Vauxhall Astra before both the Astra and the bike then made off turning right out of the car park heading towards the A46.

Two men in their early 20s have been arrested in connection with the incident and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the robbery on Humberstone Lane or who may have seen the Astra or the motorcycle in the pub car park.

Detective Sergeant Dave Speight who is investigating the incident said: "We believe both vehicles entered the pub car park at around 8.15am this morning and the Astra was left parked there while the suspects left together on the motorcycle.

"The car park is close to Watermead Country Park. Perhaps you were out walking your dogs or passing through the area at this time on your way to work? Did you see either vehicle? Did you see the Astra being parked up?

"Maybe you'd taken advantage of the half-term holiday to take your children to the park? If you were there and you saw the Astra or the motorcycle then we'd be keen to hear from you.

"Perhaps you saw the direction they took when they left the car park, maybe you saw two people on a motorcycle heading towards Wanlip Road.

"Or were you in Thurmaston this morning? Perhaps you didn't witness the robbery but saw two men on a motorcycle acting suspiciously prior to the incident.

"If you have any information regarding this crime or the people involved please get in touch."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DS 1683 Dave Speight from Central CID on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in his identification number 1683. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers free* and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
