Over 2000 stolen from elderly woman in Horsefair Street Both women in the convenience store

Both women in the convenience store

Officers have released images of two women they are keen to speak to in connection with the theft of a considerable amount of money from a man and a woman on Horsefair Street in Leicester.

The incident happened at about 10.40am on Friday February 20, 2009, after the victims, a woman in her 70s and a 52-year-old man, had withdrawn money from a building society and a bank on Horsefair Street.

They placed the money in an envelope and put this in an orange carrier bag. They then made their way to a nearby convenience store.

It was later discovered that a hole had been cut into the plastic bag and £2,200 of cash had been stolen.

A woman seen watching the couple inside the bank followed them along the street and into the store, walking extremely close to them. A second woman then entered the shop. She spoke to the first woman and also walked close to the victims.

There is a strong possibility that these women were involved in the theft.

The first woman is described as of Eastern European appearance, in her early twenties, between 5'5" and 5'7" tall, of slim build, wearing blue jeans, flat shoes, a white jacket and a white scarf on her head. She was also carrying a large, dark bag over her shoulder.

The second woman is described as of Eastern European appearance, in her mid forties, between 5'3" and 5'5" tall and of medium build. She was wearing blue jeans, a jacket and a white scarf around her neck.

PC Claire Middleton, who is investigating the incident, said: "Think back, were you in Horsefair Street between 10am and 11am that Friday morning? I am keen to speak to anybody who witnessed the theft or saw either of these two women in the area before or after the incident.

"Do you recognise either of these women from these pictures? If so, then please contact police or Crimestoppers, which can be done anonymously.

"The victims have been left extremely distressed by the incident. I would urge people to take care and be vigilant when withdrawing large amounts of money."

Anybody with any information is asked to contact PC 4820 Claire Middleton on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4820. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
