Illegal immigration operation results in 14 arrests

Police officers have carried out raids at a number of addresses in Leicester as part of a pre-planned operation aimed at targeting illegal immigration.

The operation was led by detectives from Operation Rebutia, a team of police and immigration officers who target and investigate overseas criminality.  They were supported by officers from Leicestershire Constabulary.

Ten men, aged between 23 and 68, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting unlawful immigration to a member state contrary to section 25 of the Immigration Act 1971.

The investigation centres on allegations that people have been facilitating the entry of non UK citizens into other countries.

During the course of their investigations, officers also arrested two men for immigration offences and two men for immigration and fraud offences.

In total 11 addresses in Leicester have been searched.  Local Neighbourhood Beat officers have also been supporting the operation by offering reassurance and delivering leaflets to local residents explaining what the police activity was in connection with.

Detective Chief Inspector David Sandall, who heads the Operation Rebutia team for Leicestershire Constabulary said: "This operation demonstrates our commitment to tackle criminality involving foreign nationals.

"However, we also need your help in our fight to keep the criminals out.  If you are aware of crime being committed by people of foreign nationality then contact us at Operation Rebutia and our specialist team of investigators will look into it."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Operation Rebutia team on Leicester (0116) 222 2222.

Background - Op Rebutia - the East Midlands Foreign National Crime Team

East Midlands-wide teams to catch foreign criminals were launched last year, bringing together police and immigration officers to tackle criminality.

The five regional police forces - Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire - have come together with the UK Border Agency to form Foreign National Crime teams to track down, arrest and remove foreign criminals across the region.

The key objective of the foreign national crime teams is to prioritise enforcement activity against foreign nationals, whether in the UK legally or illegally, causing harm in our society by committing serious crimes or involved in activities such as terrorism, controlled drugs, human trafficking and other aspects of organised immigration crime.

The teams can take three forms of action against foreign criminals:

(a) prosecution - where the offence can be proven and/or the subject is non-removable;

(b) removal/deportation - where the subject is suspected of being involved in high harm criminality, eg dealing in Class A drugs but cannot be prosecuted due, typically, to a lack of available evidence; and (c) economic sanction - where the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) can be used to target the assets of those involved in criminality.
