Students are helping to launch guidelines on how schools can support young people experiencing domestic violence.

The County Council guidance will be launched at an event next Wednesday (18th March) and will include a performance by students from Groby Community College.

The Domestic Abuse Protocol for Schools, which provides help for school staff on how to support children and young people who are living with or experiencing domestic abuse, was originally published in 2006. The revised guidelines provide up-to-date information for schools on domestic abuse locally.

Groby Community College has been working with the County Council's community safety and anti-bullying teams to put on the play which aims to raise awareness and provoke thoughts about domestic abuse. It is hoped that in the future, the play called 'Trapped' can be shown to other students to raise awareness of this issue.

Byron Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Statistics show that growing numbers of young people are experiencing abuse in their relationships and it is important that we can help them recognise it at the early stages and seek help.

"I’m pleased to see young people getting involved in raising this issue.”

The media are invited to the students' performance in Sparkenhoe Committee Room at County Hall, between 10 and 10.15am on Wednesday, 18th March.

County Hall is on Leicester Road in Glenfield.
