Community Volunteers make amazing contribution in North West Leicestershire
In the last year, community volunteers have contributed more than two and a half thousand hours of voluntary work to policing and community safety in North West Leicestershire.
Based on a 37 hour working week, 2, 661 hours is equivalent to 71 weeks of work a year.
Community volunteers carry out a variety of tasks for the police in North West Leicestershire including working in the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Office; providing administrative support to all NHW Schemes across the District; working with Neighbourhood Beat Teams to develop close relationships with their communities; supporting crime prevention initiatives at community events such as the Ashby Show, Download Music Festival and the Moto GP. They also help out at ‘Have a Say Days' asking residents for their views about local policing issues and they attend Community Forums and Joint Action Group meetings. Volunteers free up officers time and allow them to spend more time on patrol.
Community Initiatives Coordinator, Steve Hastings, who looks after the volunteers said; "We have 32 volunteers here at North West Leicestershire and they make an invaluable contribution to supporting the police in a variety of roles across the District. They offer their time for no financial reward at major community events; they support Neighbourhood Watch schemes and are at the heart of the community helping to promote community safety and crime prevention. They are asked to commit between two and four hours a week but many of them do more than that and some volunteers come in every week and help out.
"When I added up the hourly contribution that our volunteers made in the last year I was amazed to see that it amounted to a staggering 71 weeks of work which is really amazing. They are so dedicated and enjoy what they do that it is a pleasure to work with them."
There are no formal qualifications needed in the role of community volunteer but honesty, integrity and basic numeracy and literacy are essential. Volunteers should also have a positive and friendly approach towards the public, an ability to work in a team and a willingness to learn new skills.
The police are not looking for any more volunteers at North West Leicestershire at the moment but anyone who would like to volunteer to work elsewhere across the Force should contact the Resourcing Department on (0116) 222 2222 extension 2062 or write to:
