Pay - but don't display Warning signs are being attached to parking meters in Leicester

Warning signs are being attached to parking meters in Leicester

Police are putting warning signs on every parking meter in Leicester city centre in an attempt to reduce vehicle crime even further.

The bright yellow stickers remind motorists to remove all valuables from their vehicles including sat navs and their cradles. It is hoped they will serve as a timely reminder when motorists are parking their vehicles in the city centre and purchasing ‘pay and display' tickets.

Inspector Chris Brown, commander of the city centre local policing unit, said: "We have made real progress in reducing vehicle crime over the past year, with a 20 per cent reduction in thefts from vehicles and 19 per cent reduction in thefts of vehicles, compared to the previous year. That equates to 114 less victims of crime.

"However we are committed to reducing this type of crime even further and hope these warning signs will make motorists in the city centre think twice before leaving valuables on display in their vehicles.

"Vehicle crime is usually opportunist. A thief spots an item left on display in a parked car and takes the chance. By removing all valuables, in particular sat navs, motorists can significantly reduce their risk of becoming a victim of vehicle crime.

"We also advise motorists to rub off any marks left on their windscreen by a sat nav, as this is a tell tale sign that a sat nav may be hidden inside the vehicle."
