27 March 2009 Young people rewarded in 'Oscars' style awards night!

Photo Opportunity: Young people’s achievements will be celebrated at a special ‘Oscars’ style awards night hosted by Leicestershire’s Lord-Lieutenant.   This is the third year that these awards have been held.  The event is taking place next week on Tuesday 31st March at 8.45pm at County Hall in Glenfield.

The event will see young people from both Leicester and Leicestershire being rewarded for some of the most remarkable examples of dedication, service to others and outstanding personal achievements.

The award, which is open to young people aged 13-19, is the first of its kind to be initiated by a Lord-Lieutenant.  Lady Grettton wanted to identify and reward the best examples of achievement amongst our young people.  This is the third year the awards have been running and many other  Leiutenancies have been so impressed by what Lady Gretton has done for Leicestershire, that they too have adopted them and are arranging their own awards.

Lady Gretton, said: “As Lord-Lieutenant I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of remarkable young people who at times despite disadvantage or obstacles placed before them have shown great courage and dedication.”

Over 70 people were identified by members of the public, teachers and youth workers as potential candidates for the awards.  The awards are divided into five categories each with three short-listed candidates, with one winner for each section and one overall winner.  Each category winner is awarded a prize worth £500 with prizes also given to the runners-up.

These awards are supported by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, Leicestershire Constabulary, Crimebeat, William Davis, Willmott Dixon, The Leicestershire and Rutland Masonic Charity Association and The Everard Foundation.

What is the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award?

Young people are key members of society and it is important that their positive role within our community is recognised and celebrated. There are many good examples of what young people have achieved, sometimes despite great disadvantage and obstacles placed before them.

The Lord-Lieutenant, Jennifer, Lady Gretton has established this award scheme to raise the profile of young people’s achievements. In partnership with organisations such as those agencies offering services to young people and the business community this award seeks to identify and reward the very best examples of achievement by young people in Leicester and Leicestershire.

Eligibility criteria for the award

The award is open to young people aged 13-19 living in Leicester or Leicestershire.  The young person can be nominated by other young people, their school, parent/carer or any other agency.

The award recognises and rewards young people who have demonstrated exceptional volunteering, leadership, commitment or determination in five specific categories:

  • Bravery - Overcoming personal barriers to achieve success, making a stand against bullying, racism etc, or a life-saving act of bravery.
  • Kindness in helping others - Supporting an elderly neighbour or relative, fundraising, etc.
  • Improving the community - Commitment to improving their school, community or local environment.
  • A voice for young people - Contribution to promoting the views of children and young people in decision making.
  • Creativity and innovation - Demonstrating fresh thinking and new ideas in the arts, music, engineering or computing.

There will be a separate award for each category. From the winners of these categories one person will be announced as Lord-Lieutenant’s Young Person of the Year.

The selection and award of prizes

A panel of judges, included young people and chaired by the Lord-Lieutenant, considered all nominations meeting the criteria for the award.

The judges shortlisted 3 young people to be nominated for each category of the Award.

The shortlisted nominees are invited to attend the Awards Evening to be hosted by the Lord-Lieutenant. Friends and family will join the nominees.
