Warning after three incidents of concern in Leicester

Police are warning women to be extra vigilant when walking alone after three incidents of concern in Leicester.

All three incidents have involved women being approached by an Asian man in a dark blue or black car. No women have been harmed but the circumstances have prompted police to issue a warning.

The first incident happened on Sunday March 29 at around 10.30pm when an 18-year-old woman, walking along a slip road near Glenhills Boulevard in Leicester, was asked directions by an Asian man in what is described as a black car.

As she got closer to the vehicle he reached out and grabbed her arm. She pulled away and continued on her journey. The car followed her for a short while before driving off in the direction of Sturdee Road.

The second incident happened on Tuesday March 31 at around 5.40pm on Belgrave Road near Belgrave flyover when a 17-year-old woman felt someone touch her bottom. She turned around to see an Asian man with a white turban.

The woman quickly continued on her journey but when she went to cross the road a black car pulled up in front of her and the Asian driver opened the passenger door.

She tried to walk around it but the car reversed appearing to be trying to block her path. The woman ran off and called the police.

The third incident was reported to police on Saturday but happened the previous day on Friday April 3. The incident is said to have happened on Sandhills Avenue in Hamilton at 11.15am.

A woman reported an Asian man in a blue Astra asked her to approach his car. When she ignored him he followed her for some time until she went into a nearby shop.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Gary Rogers who is investigating the incidents said: "The similarities between these three incidents are impossible to ignore but we're keeping an open mind as to whether the same people are responsible.

"The last thing we want to do is alarm people but we've had these three very similar reports which is naturally very concerning.

"We hope that by alerting women to these incidents it will make them extra vigilant when walking out alone. The best advice is to try and avoid walking anywhere alone if at all possible but we appreciate that it is not always practical.

"If you do have to walk anywhere, please make sure you carry a personal attack alarm which can be bought quite cheaply. Some local police stations can provide free personal attack alarms so it may be worth contacting your location station to see if they can provide you with one.

"While no-one has actually been harmed in these incidents they are naturally very distressing for the women involved.

"We are therefore keen to speak to anyone who has information either about these incidents themselves or any other incidents they may have witnessed or experienced.

"Do you think you may know who this man or men may be? Perhaps the man in the white clothes and turban is not a part of this but is a key witness? Maybe you have also been spoken to my an Asian man in a dark coloured car but have not reported it to the police.

"If you have any information we'd be keen to hear from you."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 1849 Tony Harman from City CID on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in his identification number 1849. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers free* and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
